I received these images from Amir, a bird photographed 23 September 2011 in Ashdod, Israel.
I can't remember seen cachinnans birds showing arrested moult, but maybe I missed something.
Anybody seen and documented this?
Cheers, Mars

Re: arrested moult in cachinnans
I think that primary pattern (incl. faint dark shafts on gc) points towards barabensis. Is it possible to exclude this possibility? It would be much of a relief..
Re: arrested moult in cachinnans
I will stir the pot further and claim barabensis Primary pattern with obvius mark on p4 is a good marker for this 'LBBG'
Then again, we are supposed to be extremely carefull about these things, rightfully.

Hi Guys,
Here are some pictures of a cachinnans/barabensis type gulls from South-east Kazakhstan (May-June, 2011.). Among 40 adult gulls black on P4 was quite common (in one case even up to P1!), but the extent of the black and the primary pattern looks good for cachinnans imo.
Any thoughts on that?
Cheers,
Gabor

Re: arrested moult in cachinnans
wow, these are spectacular pics of what i'd call the "eastern cachinnans" type with a lot of black down but on the same time long grey tongues which is not so typical for barabensis?
how much intergradation between these two taxa? large p10 mirror placed distally and the deep "bays" of white primary bases into black furthermore serve for a cachi-look.
as for the initial bird (the one from ashdod) it looks indeed more barabensis-like with that large black field on wingtip and shortish legs but upright stance.

I have some more pix of more birds from the very same place if you interested in studying them.
Best wishes,
Gabor
ps: these gulls were probably failed breeders or floaters because they were hanging around there all the time. By range they should be cachinnans, right? but who knows with gulls..
Re: arrested moult in cachinnans
