I just received an email from Jean-Michel, with the attachement. Its 1cy Herring Gull J1490, ringed in far northern Norway, from a remote area even further away than the Russian white K-rings we see in NW Europe.
It nicely illustrates the potentials of the harbour Boulogne/Mer, a real magnet for gulls. I'm happy Jean-Michel photgraphed it, but how could I miss it in Holland?!!!

American Herring Gull just smiles silently about such European distances. V66 green, travelled 3423 KM to the Gulf of Mexico...

Well, we can beat that Smith there . I ringed a herring gull chick in Troms in 1999 that was observed in Qued Massa, Morocco in january 2000 by Mike Marsh and Steve Piotrowski, and this birds was again reported (as Herring Gull) in Norfolk, UK in january 2002. The distance from the ringing place Edøy in Troms to Qued Massa is 4729 kms

A ringed Herring Gull in Marocco without photo is difficult to believe. The Danish Ring Atlas shows also recoveries in Southern Marocco and at the Canaries, but this smells for me more to LBBG (ringed as chick in mixed colonies).
Re: 1cy argentatus - record distance
Yes, I am totally agree. But the observers was sure they had read the code correctly, and the bird are observed again as HG, so then we think this is correct.
