Hi Richard,
Guess we discussed this one in Bulgaria, last February.
Can't think of anything better than Viking too...

Re: Russian common gull?
Not much response yet.
I think to see a little grey line on the outerweb of P8 before it reaches to the primary coverts. Therefore it is no 'standard' heinei as in the Adriaens-Gibbins paper. Still, it could be one, but hard to make 100% sure.

Re: Viking/Nelson or HG?
Sorry for my late reply. I too think this is beyond normally Herring Gull. There must have been strong influence of hyperboreus in this bird: Viking Gull.

1st cycle smith look-alike - Scotland February 27 2009
This is a 1st cycle Herring in the darker end of the spectrum.
Dismissed as AmHeGu on much white spacing on undertail and uppertail coverts and too much streaking on breast and belly (ideally a completely velvety smooth brown texture here).

tables of traits for smith (in Dutch; to be translated)
To discuss potential smith candidates in the Netherlands, we created two tables for 1W (1st cycle) and 2W (2nd cycle) birds: http://www.gull-research.org/smith/smithtabel.html http://www.gull-research.org/smith/smith2wtabel.html In due time, this should be translated into English, but already the sm...
Belarus
Dmitry, please feel welcome to the forum. As you live in an interesting place, also very interesting for gulls, I have created a "local patch" Belarus. Hope to see many pictures from your country and I also hope we can somehow cooperate to get birds ringed and measured in your colonies. I guess many...
